2nd Annual Kinston Plein Air Paint Out

I just got off the phone with Niki Litts of the Kinston Community Council for the Arts who is organizing the 2nd Annual Plein Air Paint Out in Kinston. Many OOPS members participated last year and had a blast! Read about it HERE!

I know several members are wanting to participate this year as well... so here's the scoop from Niki!

The format for the Paint Out has changed since last year and is as follows...

They have moved it from a competition format to a juried show format. We will also have two full days to paint this year (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM each day). The Paint Out is simple... show up at the gazebo in Neuse Way Park in Downtown Kinston (map) at 9:00 AM on Thursday, April 30th. There you will pay your $15 entry and be given a map of the paint out boundaries. You will be able to paint from 9AM-5PM on Thursday and 9AM-5PM on Friday, April 1st. At 5:00 PM on Friday, April 1st all artists will meet at the Kinston Community Council for the Arts where your three best paintings will be turned in to be judged into a juried show. The show will coincide with the Festival on the Neuse and be on display for one week where each artist will have the opportunity to sell their work. Unsold artwork will be available for pick up from the council on Saturday, May 9, 2009. The Council retains a small commission for the sales.

I think the new format (non competition style) and being able to pay the entry fee the day of the event will prove helpful in bringing out more artists with a common love... plein air painting. Hope to see you all at this one.

Bernie

Brave or Crazy???? March Paint Out ~ Cold and Rainy!

Are we BRAVE or CRAZY????

The March Paint Out in Richlands proved to be challenging to say the least. COLD and WET was the order of the day. Members had to get creative just to stay dry.

OOPS members present... LtoR... Mitchell, Dean, Karen, and Bernie. Pat, Kit, and Patsy also joined in on the fun but are not pictured here.

Patsy's painting of Buck's Service Station... she painted from the back of her van to stay dry!

Dean, Mitchell, and Bernie chose refuge in this gazebo at Venters Park in Downtown Richlands... a GREAT/DRY spot!

Dean choose a BIG panel this month!

Mitchell working...

Bernie weilding a knife...

Maybe next month the weather will cooperate... ;)
No biggie if it doesn't... we'll still paint en plein aire!

March Paint Out set for the 15th in Downtown Richlands

Due to a conflicting schedule the March Paint Out originally set for Mike's Farm has been moved to Downtown Richlands. The old buildings and homes will give us the opportunity to put some of our "linear perspective" principles to work.

WHAT: OOPS March "Paint Out"

WHEN: Sunday, March 15, 2009 at 1:00 PM

WHERE: Old Downtown area of Richlands. Meet at the small park by the Fire Department on N. Wilmington Street. Map HERE... just in case!
Check out Town Ordinances pdf below for rules about gathering on streets and sidewalks.

WHY: Plein Air Painting... we're addicted!

Join us as we paint in Old Downtown Richlands... street scenes, antebellum homes, parks, etc! Newbies welcome... all mediums and skill levels... simply show up with your gear and be prepared to have fun!

Pat Boni's Workshop was PRIMO!

Local artists had a treat as Pat Boni came out of retirement to teach art classes again... this time around her subject was "Linear Perspective" and her students were members of the famed group of Onslow County plein air artists who call themselves OOPS!

Over 15 artists were present and eager to learn. Below Pat is showing how to measure objects.

Pat was able to give one on one attention to each member present too. Here she is with Kit... one of our newest members.

Here she is with Donna, Willow Faye, and K.

Thanks Pat for this excellent workshop! We hope to have these free workshops several times a year. Stay tuned...

Meet OOPS Artist... K. Rowland

K. Rowland
Artist: 2006-2009

Painting saved me from loneliness after I retired from teaching. The canvas provided an outlet of living expression that included all the colors of life. I am a self-taught artist who is finding each finished painting to be a journey to ones inner self where the artist in you lives.

I was extremely pleased to find art in the little town we chose to live in at Red Willows. I paint 3 days a week and sketch at home. People usually ask if I am an artist because I have some sort of paint on me or my clothing at all times. I just say I am a student of art….I believe the energy I get when painting is inspired……it is a way to experience the spiritual side of life daily.
