"Beat the Heat" still life from life at Council for the Arts. "Community Art Day" still life gathering August 26, 2017 from 10:00am-2:00pm. This will be our second installment for the gathering. Please come join us for another great session! Bring your art supplies and easels. All mediums and skill levels are welcome!

September 16, 2017 - OOPS Sept. Paint Out
Local plein air competition in conjunction with a special event being held at the new Riverwalk Marina at Kerr Street. Details coming as soon as we get them.

October 6-8, 2017 - Oct. Paint Out

Emerald Isle, North Carolina
Artist find places to paint on Emerald Isle or surrounding area on Saturday. Some home owners who want their view painted will be given to artist with maps and name tags Friday night at registration social at Irene Baileys Studio. You will also have your canvases stamped for the peoples choice cash award on Sunday at the Art Show and Sale. The paintings must be hang-able. All artists whether you paint Plein Air or not, are invited to exhibit and sell there work at the Art Show on Sunday. You just need to notify Irene and register Friday night at Social. All artists will be responsible for their display equipment such as easels, table, chairs and tent or umbrellas.

We will "Beat the Heat" and paint a Still Life from life at the Council for the Art's :"Community Still Life Gathering"/ The Council is asking for a small donation. This is a great opportunity to get an 8"x8" gallery wrapped canvas from the Council to paint a "Donation" painting for their Art Gala in September. Gere are the detaails listed by the Council...

Come and join us, July 29, 2017, from 10:00am-1:00pm for a donation based community still life art gathering at the Council Gallery. This is a judgement free event open to all skill levels. Plein Air Paint Out ~ Overview and Rules

 April 27, 28, and 29th, competing artists will paint, out in the open, at local public and private sites in beautiful Historic Jacksonville, North Carolina. The painting boundary encompasses many picturesque scenes including, but not limited to, the Pelletier House along the banks of the New River, the USO, the old Jacksonville Train Depot, the City Hall Tower, the Freedom Fountain, beautiful Wilson Bay, plus the numerous memorials in the Lejeune Memorial Gardens. The Art Block Plein Air Paint Out is sponsored by the Council for the Arts and will feature a judged competition with prizes, a wet-paint sale during the Art Block street festival, and a month long exhibit/sales in the Council Gallery.

Rules:  Artists may submit up to THREE pieces for judging. All works must be done en plein air (outside), during the event times (nocturnal compositions accepted), within the painting boundaries as confirmed by the map, and without assistance of photographs. All canvasses/substrates must be officially stamped at registration. Eligible submissions must be turned in by 1:00pm on Saturday. All media are accepted, except for photography.

Canvas Restrictions: Canvases/Substrates may be no larger than 36 inches in any direction.   Artists may submit up to 3 completed works for judging. All substrates must be officially stamped at registration to be considered eligible for judging and the wet-paint sale.

Awards: 1st Place: $200   2nd Place: $150   3rd Place: $100

Sales: Completed works may be listed for sale, at the artists’ request, in the wet-paint sale and during the gallery exhibit period. The wet-paint sale will begin immediately after the judging, on Saturday afternoon, April 29th during Art Block. Sales generated during the wet-paint sale will be the sole responsibility of the artists, for which 100% commission will be retained by the artists. Works will be displayed, upon request, at the main Gallery in the Council, from April 29th through June 16th (unless sold). Council for the Arts will retain a 25% commission for CFTA members and 35% for non-members. Artists must price their own pieces, as the Council is unable to price pieces for artists.

Judging and Critique:  We are excited to have Jeremy Sams as this year's Awards Judge for our event. Jeremy is an accomplished plein air painter and is well know artist throughout our state.  Jeremy's paintings are collected throughout the world and he has amassed many accolades and awards for his work . Jeremy promotes and is an advocate for plein air painting. He even travels abroad as a missionary where he incorporates plein air painting as part of his mission work. Jeremy is currently a member of the North Carolina Plein Air Painters,  Triad Outdoor Painters,  Charlotte Plein Air Painters and Plein Air Carolina. He is also the founder of the Fellowship of Plein Air Painters. Jeremy is featured in this month's Plein Air Magazine.

OOPS February Paint Out / Life Class

Calling all painters! Sunday February 19th from noon till 4pm at the council for the arts (Jacksonville) we will be having our yearly model session! Bring your paints and easels and get ready for four hours of painting from life!! The model is yet to be determined. I will attempt to work with the local homeless shelter to see if they have someone who could use the donations. For those who do not know, donations are accepted to pay the model for sitting and defray some of the cost of the room rental. If you are tight on cash don't worry about it you are still very welcomed and wanted!   Please share this on your timeline so we can get max participation!! All skill levels are welcome! The more the merrier!!

I want to share this info with you from our artist friends in Elzabeth City, NC.

Artist Instructions & Rules

• Painting Area: Artist may paint any subject or scene outdoors he/she chooses in the Elizabeth City area (in town or on the outskirts). The painting(s) must be completed in the outdoor area and not from photographs.

• Painting Period: Begins at 10 am Friday, October 28, 2016 and ends at 12 pm Friday, November 4, 2016. All work must be received at Arts of the Albemarle (AoA) by 12 pm Friday, November 4th. Artwork submitted after 12 pm on November 4, 2016 will not be accepted.

• Required Registration and Entry Fees: Download the registration form or register online. Registration fee is $25.00 for Arts of the Albemarle artist members or $30 for non-members. Fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.

• Check In & Canvas Stamping: All artists must check in at Arts of the Albemarle (516 E. Main St. in Downtown Elizabeth City) at the Splash registration table between 10 am and 5 pm. All canvases must be stamped on the back prior to starting to paint (gesso underpainting is ok). Artists may have unlimited number of stamped canvases but can submit up to 2 pieces for jurying and for display/sale. Only stamped canvases can be shown or sold at this event. Maximum allowed canvas size is 16"x20". All pieces must be labeled with artist's name, title of work, and price.

• Juror: Anthony Ulinski His career began as a studio furniture maker in 1976. His furniture and sculpture have been exhibited at the Smithsonian Craft Fair, the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Fair, the Funeria in San Francisco and the John Elder Gallery in New York. In 1993 Anthony began painting, working with Elizabeth Lentz, Jacob Cooley and Beverly McIver. His awards include the painting fellowships at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts and the Vermont Studio Center. Anthony teaches woodworking and painting workshops at Fenland School of Crafts, Arrowmont School of Crafts, Peters Valley Craft Center, the Durham Arts Council, the Pocosin Arts Center and East Carolina University.

• Ribbons and cash prizes: $500 First place; $350 Second place; $150 Third place, and Sponsor’s Award $200. This event is generously sponsored by the Albemarle Area Association of REALTORS.

• Wet Paint Sale: Friday, November 4 from 5:30-7:30pm, during First Friday ArtWalk. All work must be framed and properly wired to hang on the wall OR displayed on easels. Framed artwork will remain on display through the month of November. Only works created on the stamped canvases will be for sale. No previously painted work will be accepted for the sale.

• Proceeds from the Wet Paint Sale: For all artwork sold, 35% of the sales price will benefit Arts of the Albemarle, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. AoA will collect all monies from the sale of artwork including tax through the end of 2016. The artist will be mailed a check for his/her amount owed between the 15th and 30th of December. A completed W-9 is required for payment.

• Unsold Artwork: Artist will have the opportunity to hang any unsold artwork from the plein air event in the gallery through January, 2017, pending space availability. Artists may request artwork be mailed to them at their own expense. After July 31, 2017, any remaining unsold work will become property of AoA.\

• Liability: AoA assumes no responsibility for theft, damage or liability. The artist is responsible for insurance of his/her own artwork. We will make our best effort to assure the security of the artwork in the display area.

• Inclement Weather: The event will take place rain or shine, so please be prepared
