Susan Cheatham is painting in New Bern today and contacted John Hanley who in turn contacted me with this piece of important information concerning our IPAP Paint Out this weekend in New Bern.
Evidently there is a huge bike ride scheduled for New Bern and they have set up carnival tents and camping facilities for the bikers at Union Point Park... this will not present a problem with our painting but it will present a problem with parking at the park. Susan suggests that pliein air painters park at the public library on the corner of Craven and Johnson Streets in the downtown area. We may not be able to get a group photo as planned so please snap a photo or two of you painting so we can submit it to the IPAP's blog chronicling this worldwide event.

The International Plein Air Painters (IPAP) 7th Annual Worldwide Paint Out is a gathering of plein air artists from all over the world who agree to paint on the same days to promote the tradition of painting "en plein aire".
Eastern North Carolina artists will converge again this year on the historical town of New Bern on September 12 and 13, 2009 to do their part. August Paint Out @ Tarkil Branch Homestead... Southern Hospitality at its best!
Benny and Annette Fountain recently opened the Tarkil Branch Farm’s Homestead Museum, located on part of the working 375-acre farm. The farm came into the family in 1912 when Willie Hunter (Grandfather of Benny Fountain) purchased the land. In 1926, Willie sold 82 acres of land to David Fountain (Benny Fountain's father). This 82 acre tract included the 1830's house proudly on display.
They graciously opened the farm to us last Sunday for our monthly Paint Out... one of the BEST places we have painted to date. Benny dropped by and spent most of the afternoon with us and gave us an awesome tour of the buildings and shared the personal history behind the farm.... Southern hospitality at its best... thank you sincerely Benny!

The site offered an array of vintage buildings as subjects to paint...
The crowning jewel was this old house which dated back to 1830 and was even occupied after the Civil War by Hosea Goodman Lanier a corporal in Company B, 3rd Regiment, North Carolina Troops, Confederate Staes of America.

Words of Wisdom about "Painting from Life" from artist and teacher, Joanne Julian
The following excerpts are from email correspondence with artist/teacher, Joanne Julian and are reprinted here with her kind permission. Our own K Rowland was an art student of Joanne's. Words of Wisdom on Painting from Life vs Painting from Photographs by Joanne Julian...
Don't forget to draw/paint from life. Within the creative process, it is more of a direct hit, and the subject matter will breathe through you. You may not believe me, but the photo is an intermediary step that you may feel assists you with accuracy, but truly, it dilutes the essence of the subject. Rather than choosing technical accuracy as the goal, I think it is ultimately better to practice from life a few more times, and aim to own the essence and authenticity of the thing. That moves beyond accuracy to the truth of your personal vision, and you own it forever. Truth (the relationship between you, your vision and the subject) comes through your own brain, eye and hand not the camera. And better still, it breeds confidence. That's how it is you and how you are creative. Trust yourself. Why would you want anything else? The rewards and the wisdom gained are immeasureable.
The two big issues seem to be fear and risk. The first we have too much of and the second never enough. Unless one has made the decision to become solely a technical painter, copying photographs (even techniques), especially among students, can tend to develop bad habits and inhibit creativity. Early on, when students receive accolades for achieving a likeness, they are often lured (or perhaps they even lure themselves) into thinking that technical prowess is art. It is not; just as developing good grammar does not make great literature. Used as a point of departure, however, photographs coupled with risk and innovation can be catalysts on a creative path. Form without content can be empty. Content without form can be selfish gibberish. Both can be boring or uncommunicative.
Perhaps an antidote to some of that fear is a clearer understanding of the depth and breadth of the elements and principles of design and their use to advance composition and ultimately communication in the same ways they are applicable in music and dance. An investment here far outweighs the security of a photograph.

The Jones County Heritage Festival will be held on Saturday, July 11 from 10 to 4... Setup for downtown is 9am. John Moore will Grand Marshall the festival parade down main street at 10 am. Artists and crafts people will be set up on downtown Trenton sidewalks. Other attractions will include the Brock Mill House, plus lots of fun activities at the Jones County Civic Center. The festival is an old timey family celebration of rural like heritage skills like makin lye soap, churning butter, operating non-mechanized tools, looping tobacco, making handmade quilts, shelling corn by hand, entertainment and etc... We have places like the old Hardware store, the courthouse, the old tire company, the downtown businesses as a whole, the farmers market and the old churches in the downtown area that your oops group could paint. You could also paint all the people at the parade, downtown festival, the Brock Mill House and pond, and scene at the civic center all during the day from 10 - 4. My place of business is right downtown Trenton and I will be there at 8 am to begin the farmers market and give direction for all arts and crafts booths to set up along the sidewalks.
