NOTE FROM BERNIE: The OOPS bunch will participate again this year in the IPAP Worldwide Paint Out to promote the tradition of plein air painting in our area. We will join forces with anyone wishing to join in on the fun in Wilmington this year. Its Southern Charm and subject matter plus the fact that we have several members from or near Wilmington made the location an easy choice. There are no rules to participate... simply show up when you can on the dates listed and paint. No directions necessary... simply follow HWY 17S (Market Street) straight to the waterfront area in Downtown Wilmington... there you can find plenty of lovely scenarios to paint. Please make sure you photograph yourself, your setting, and your painting to share on IPAP's facebook page after the event. I encourage group photos whenever possible. Please be able to explain the purpose of the Worldwide Paint Out and what Plein Air painting is in general to the public if they should ask. There are plenty of places to eat in the area with public restrooms on the boardwalk on Water Street. Please register on the link below so we can show IPAP that Tarheels love to plein air paint! Most OOPS members who paint on Sunday will leave early to attend our friend and fellow OOPS artist, Mitchell Morton's opening reception at the Council for the Arts for his Solo Exhibit.See you in Wilmington next Saturday and Sunday!

WHY: To support IPAP's devotion to promoting the tradition of plein air painting WORLDWIDE!

Plein Air Painters and Cyclists converge on the historic town on New Bern for great causes!

The Eastern NC Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society announced over 2,400 cyclists and 300 volunteers participated in last weekend’s Bike MS: Historic New Bern Ride. Cyclists left from Union Point Park in New Bern for the successful 21st annual Bike MS September 12-13. Over $1.34 million has been counted to date, and officials project that they are on target to meet their $1.7 million goal.

Also converging on the historic town were plein air artists from Eastern North Carolina participating in the International Plein Air Painter's (IPAP) 7th annual Worldwide Paint Out (WWPO). The paint out is designed to bring recognition to the tradition of painting "en plein air"... the French term for "in the open air". The event brings plein air artists from all over the world who agree to paint outdoors on the same date by organizing events in their local area. Plein air painters from Onslow, Craven, Beaufort, Carteret, Wayne, Pamlico, and Pender counties were present for the special 2 day event.

Dean, Bernie, and Mitchell take part in IPAP Worldwide Paint Out...

The Three Plein Air Musketeers (Dean, Bernie, and Mitchell) headed to New Bern on the heels of tropical storm Hanna. After the storm... sky's were clear... plein air fever set in... and we were off and arrived in New Bern about 2:45 PM on Saturday the 6th. We set up near Christ's Church on Pollock Street and painted till almost dark. We all managed to get two paintings in each as Penny cheered us on!

Finished works to come soon...

Sunday morning (the 7th)... I met Susan, John, Art, and several other artists at the Gazebo at Union Point Park at 9:00 AM. Susan had the event perfectly organized... had us sign in and gave us maps of the New Bern downtown area. Each artist went their own way and I opted for more architecture in beautiful downtown New Bern while most of the other artists painted along the waterfront. Mitchell joined me around 10:30 AM accompanied by Penny and we both painted two more works a piece... leaving around 5:00 PM.

Finished paintings coming soon...

All-in-all... a GREAT weekend... a PERFECT location... nice people... Great weather and Light! Artists from Onslow County (OOPS), New Bern (Twin River Artist Association), Oriental, and Little Washington made the event a success! We look forward to gathering again next year... if not sooner!

We hope to highlight everyone's work on this blog asap...

Bernie

PS... Mark your calendar for October 18 - 19, 2008 for the First Annual Oriental Plein Air Paint Out Competition... I'll post the details when I get them from Susan.

PSS... Also mark your calendar for the very next weekend, October 25 - 26, 2006 for the First Annual "Paint in the Park" Plein Air Competition
Sponsored by the Surf City Art Guild. Details HERE...

Worldwide Paint Out and Hanna will bring out the plein air DIEHARDS!

Tropical storm Hanna may make Saturday's Worldwide Plein Air Paint Out a bit challenging. She is projected (at this point) to be out of here by Saturday afternoon. Sunday will hopefully be PRIMO! Hopefully she will turn out to sea and both days will be PRIMO! The OAS Artists reception has been canceled for Sunday at the Council for the Arts so that gives most of us a full day to paint. See you diehards on Saturday... Maybe we can at least have a BIG turn out on Sunday... be careful everyone!

6th WORLDWIDE Plein Air Paint Out

Sponsored and by the
International Plein Air Painters Organization
September 5-6-7, 2008

Who: All plein air painters are invited to participate. You do not have to be a member of IPAP but, you must register and help spread the word by publicity and word of mouth to other plein air painters. (Details for Eastern North Carolina artists below)

When: September 6-7, 2008

Where: Downtown New Bern, NC
Worldwide in organized official groups, pocket groups and individuals painting as part of the 6th annual IPAP paint out.

To register: There is no registration fee.
Go to http://i-p-a-p.comand/ fill out the form - please include full name, affiliations, location, who you will be painting with, what publicity you can assist with.

We need your input to make this a success!

Dear OOPS artists and any artist in the Eastern North Carolina area...
Please join us in beautiful Downtown New Bern, North Carolina on Saturday, September 6, and Sunday, September 7, 2008 to do our part in promoting plein air painting worldwide. These two dates will coincide with the dates set by the IPAP and we have the honor of sharing this experience with our plein air buddies from Oriental and Washington, NC. We decided on New Bern for it's historical significance, southern charm and beauty plus the fact it is centrally located for the three groups. We extend an invitation to our friends in the Greenville plein air group and any artist wishing to join in on the fun... all mediums and skill levels welcome.

Be sure to go to this link and register... http://ipap.homestead.com/Feedback_Form.html

Saturday, September 5, 2008. (9AM ~ Until)
The plan is to meet at Union Point Park (Downtown New Bern along the waterfront) at 9:00 AM and then plan out the day. The Park address is 210 E. Front Street, plan to meet near the Gazebo to pick up scenic location map. We can scatter out and paint throughout the waterfront or downtown area... everything is within close proximity and one can easily get around by foot or car. There are plenty of cafes, etc... to grab a bite to eat.

Sunday, September 6, 2008. (9AM ~ Until)
The plan for Sunday is to meet again at Union Point Park... Park address is 210 E. Front Street, meet near the Gazebo to pick up scenic location map. Once again... you have the option to scatter and paint where you would like as this area is also close to the historiacl downtown area of New Bern. We are starting early because most of the OOPS artists from Onslow County have to be back in Jacksonville for an artists reception at the Council for the Arts and the OAS Images Show... this gives the OOPS bunch from 8AM until about 1PM to paint.

We look forward to the camaraderie we will share and the special honor of keeping the tradition of painting "En Plein Aire" alive. Once the event is over... we can gather (through email) images of all the paintings for an online exhibit to be hosted on this site.

A special thank you to Susan Cheatham for organizing the times and locations!

Please click here to comment and let us know your name, location, and what days and times you plan to paint.

This will serve as our September Piant Out for the OOPS members... make plans to attend.

Hope to see everyone there!

Thanks in advance....

Bernie Rosage Jr.
