Great turn out for PO yesterday! We had a BLAST!

We had a great turnout for our paint out yesterday at the MCAS Marina. A special thanks to Jon and Bobbie for organizing the event and handling all the details. The weather and location were perfect. The breeze and heat made it a bit challenging for our acrylic painters but everyone did a great job. It was great having Jennifer paint with us again plus two new members, Charles and Sunni. We also had a special treat with John, Renee, and LeAnne for joining us from Kinston! We are working on the date and location for the July Paint Out and info will go out as soon as we settle the details.

OOPS June Paint Out set for June 10, 2012 at the MCAS Marina...

WHAT: OOPS! JUNE 2012 Paint Out organized by Jon and Bobbie Mayes.

WHEN: Sunday, June 10, 2012 from Noon until...

WHERE: Marine Corps Air Station Marina. (Google for directions to MCAS Gate on HWY17S... Jon and Bobbie's note below includes directions on base. We will need a head count so Jon can sponsor those wishing to participate so they can enter the base. An email roll call will be sent out soon.

WHAT ELSE... MESSAGE FROM JON AND BOBBIE:

Jon contacted the MCAS New River marina and the MP's re: June paint-out.

The date of June 10th is okay.

We just need to give a list of people who plan to attend, before the event, to
the visitors center and for them to say that Jon is sponsoring them.

The only thing to remember about going to the Marina is to stay on the
main road, Curtis Street, follow it around the air strip. Make sure to
STOP at the runway stop sign, flashing lights...and look for aircraft going
towards the hangar to the left.
After the stop sign proceed to the end of the road and make a left.

There are many nice areas to paint: at the point, at the docks, and there is a
campground and also a picnic area on the hill which overlooks to Camp Lejeune  Hospital
Point.

We have heard of Black Bear, snakes: Copperhead, water moccasins and others and alligators around so just be aware.

I doubt we will encounter any but we have heard stories.
There are restrooms, picnic tables, grills, and a playground for little kids.
There are is a vending machine for soft drinks and we think a snack machine
we can find-out for sure.
There isn't any photo's of the airfield allowed, no stopping to look along the airfield,
and of course no painting, as security is very strict and there are many areas
where we aren't allowed to go.
But the Marina is very nice, lots of shade and usually a nice breeze. I think
it will be a great place. There are even covered picnic areas in case of light rain.
Hopefully, we will have good weather.

Bobbie and Jon

PS... As soon as you get on base there is a Wendys "food-eatery" before heading to the Marina. We can all meet at Wendy's afterwards for a critique of our work. They don't require an ID card but all the other stores: px and commissary and gas station do require a military Id.

WHY: Simply put... we LOVE gathering with like minded artists and painting outdoors!

Newbies welcome... all mediums and skill levels... simply show up with your gear and be prepared to have fun! No worries... there are NO art-snobs in our group!

What the heck is OOPS and how do I join the FUN?

Bernie Rosage Jr.

Instructor: Bernie Rosage Jr.
Workshop Department: Plein Air
Sponsor: The Council for the Arts, 826 New Bridge St. (across the street from the Jacksonville City Hall)
Date: Saturday, May 19, 2012 ~ 10am - 5pm

Workshop Fee: $15 (Subsidized with a grant from the Council for the Arts)
Class Size: Limited to 8 artists
Location: Jean Wenner Studio at the Council for the Arts and at Wilson Bay Park near the Council.

Concept:
Have you felt a little overwhelmed by the thought of trying to paint en plein air? Bernie shows you how fun the process can be as he breaks it down into a series of manageable steps. Learn what to expect in the field, what to pack, how to work with a limited palette, how to choose your subject matter wisely, simplify it and develop a dynamic design, plus more!

Experience:
This workshop is designed for all levels of artists who have little or no experience in plein air painting. As the founder of the Onslow Outdoor Painters Society (OOPS!), Bernie is constantly approached by artists who express an interest in plein air painting but are crippled by the intimidation of it. The goal of this workshop is dispel that fear and unveil the joys and benefits of painting in the open air on location. All artists, especially experienced studio artists, will benefit from the plein air experience.

Instructor Bio:
Bernie Rosage Jr. is an award winning painter and an enthusiastic instructor. He is a member of the Onslow Art Society, Blue Ridge Art Clan, Southern Plein Air Painters Guild, "Plein Eire" Painters of Ireland, and founder of the Onslow Outdoor Painters Society (OOPS!). One of his favorite ways to paint is on location en plein aire... the French term literally translates in open air. Bernie’s paintings are a wonderful culmination of sensitivity and skill and are collected throughout the United States, Ireland, Australia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
