Perfect Light... Perfect Weather... Perfect Location...

Soundside Park in Surf City was beautifully decorated with families playing, fishermen fishing, boaters boating, and plein air painters painting last weekend. Our OOPS October Paint Out proved to be fun, relaxing, and productive for the members able to attend.

Present were (pictured Lt0R) Dean, Mitchell, Karen, and Bernie. Olivia was present but not pictured here... Penny was pushing her on the swings. Thanks Penny... ;)

Mitchell zeroing in on the swing bridge. Is that a bird on Mitchell's head?

Bernie and Olivia had a great day painting together.

This old salt kept Bernie company most of the morning.

Olivia packing her gear like a true plein air artist.

Karen found a great secluded spot to work from.

Dean painting across the inlet. Wyn Easton (who painted with us Saturday and Sunday morning) looked up the meaning of the nautical flags waving at the park and they read S U R F C I T Y ... how cool is that!

Dean made a little friend while painting... who knew she'd become an art critic!
.
We all had a great time and missed our pards that couldn't make it.
.
See you all next month...

Great Cause needs local artists for a COOL fundraiser...

The following message is from Kristy Noble, Executive Director of the Jacksonville/Onslow Habitat for Humanity. Her organization is putting on a cool fundraiser for any artists interested. Thought I'd pass it on... please let your artist friends know about this worthy cause.

There are approximately 1600 homeless people living in Onslow County. As of August 26, 2008, there are 166 homeless children enrolled in the Onslow County School system (statistics from Onslow County Schools). That number is expected to rise dramatically as more families are evicted from their homes and more providers lose their jobs.

Studies have shown that providing a roof over someone’s head contributes more than just a place to stay. It helps to provide stability, dignity and pride for those families. Health, physical safety, and security improve. Educational and job prospects also tend to increase.

Jacksonville/Onslow Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to help end poverty in Onslow County by providing safe, decent, affordable housing to those in need. Established in 2005 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, we have completed one home in Onslow County. Our second home construction began on October 4 at 1622 Hargett St.

We are planning a unique fundraiser, “Windows of Opportunity”, that will help in raising money for home construction. This fundraiser is a silent auction event that will feature the work of local artists in the Onslow County area.

The Habitat for Humanity Restore, a thrift store that operates as a part of our fundraising efforts, recently received a large donation of old, wooden windows. We are asking local artists to take a window and transform it into a work of art, to be auctioned off at the silent auction event. Whether it becomes a painting or piece of a small sculpture, all pieces of family-appropriate work will be accepted and appreciated.

The completed windows will be auctioned off in a silent auction event. All proceeds will benefit Jacksonville/Onslow Habitat for Humanity.

To show our appreciation for anyone willing to donate their services, we welcome business cards, brochures or other promotional material to be displayed along with your submission. Artists are also welcome to attend the silent auction to answer questions and meet and greet attendees. The date, time, and location of the event will be announced at a later date.

We cannot pursue our mission of ending poverty housing in Onslow County without the support of volunteers, donors, and our community.

If you are interested in helping or have questions about the event, please contact Kristy Noble via telephone at 347-9400 or email at onslowhfhexec@yahoo.com

Thank you for your support in providing safe, decent, and affordable housing to those in need.

Surf City Paint Out Comp Top Notch... Karen and Bernie win top awards...

The Surf City Art Guild did a GREAT job of putting on their first "Art in the Park" Paint Out competition. OOPS artists, Karen Crenshaw and Bernie Rosage, fared well in the competition placing 1st and 2nd respectively.

Kathy of the SFAG awards Olivia Rosage her art kit for her participation in the event.

Susan Cheatham having a great time painting. She placed third.

Below Raleigh artist, Wyn Easton, is pictured with Bernie. Wyn and Bernie have been cyber friends for years as moderators at the online artist community of Wet Canvas. It was great to finally meet in person.

Day One Part One proved windy and rainy... Wyn pictured below cleaning up after his easel took a tumble. Karen spent the first part of the day painting from inside her car. Day One Part Two... the wind shifted, the rain blew out, and the rest of the day was nice with the mix of sun and clouds.

Day Two... Olivia joined the fun and painted several works. There was a playground located at the park to occupy here non-painting time!... how convenient!

A great time had by all!

Then around noon Dean Remington and Mitchell Morton of OOPS showed up to join Karen, Bernie, and Olivia to paint some more for the OOPS October Paint Out... photos coming soon.

25 years ago today... the Beirut Bombing remembered.

In the early morning of October 23, 1983, the First Battalion, 8th Marines Headquarters building was destroyed by a non-Lebanese, terrorist-driven truck, laden with compressed gas-enhanced explosives. This truck, like many others, had become a familiar sight at the airport and so did not raise any alarm on this morning. The resulting explosion and the collapse of the building killed 241 Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers.

Many of the victims of this atrocity were residents of Jacksonville, North Carolina. They were known as fathers, neighbors, fellow church members, and little league baseball and soccer coaches. The community was stunned over the loss of these fine men and donations began to flow to their memory. This became the "birth" of the Beirut Memorial where their names are engraved along side "They Came In Peace
