PAINT THE TOWN: Plein Air Paintout
Southport Plein Air paint-out is an exciting OUTDOOR event, sponsored by the City of Southport as a way to support artists in our area and bring public art to our streets. The event will take place on April 24th & 25th, our area’s most talented painters will paint Plein Air (in the open air). The public is invited to stroll our streets and watch as each artist turns a blank canvas in to a "one of a kind" piece of Southport art.

A WET PAINT Sale will be held on the lawn of Fort Johnston on Saturday from 4:00 until 5:00 at the Fort Johnston - Southport Museum and Visitors' Center located at 203 E. Bay, behind the NC Maritime Museum. Art enthusiasts will have a chance to take home one of these treasures in what we feel will become a collection that will be revered for many generations to come. The beauty is within our streets, the finished product is in the hands of the artist.

Artists are encouraged click this link https://southport.wufoo.com/forms/southport-paint-out-artist-registration-2015/ to register online. No Registration Fee Required.

For more information contact Cindy Brochure at cindy_brochure@southportnc.org or (910) 523-6124.

OOPS... We've made it a whole year!

We've made it a whole year and have had a BLAST... not to mention some GREAT "Paint Outs". The red dots on the map of Onslow County show where we have partied... I mean painted. We have been keeping the tradition of painting "en plein aire" alive and well in Eastern North Carolina.

Thanks everyone for making our group and adventures a success... here's to another GREAT year!

2nd Annual Kinston Plein Air Paint Out

I just got off the phone with Niki Litts of the Kinston Community Council for the Arts who is organizing the 2nd Annual Plein Air Paint Out in Kinston. Many OOPS members participated last year and had a blast! Read about it HERE!

I know several members are wanting to participate this year as well... so here's the scoop from Niki!

The format for the Paint Out has changed since last year and is as follows...

They have moved it from a competition format to a juried show format. We will also have two full days to paint this year (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM each day). The Paint Out is simple... show up at the gazebo in Neuse Way Park in Downtown Kinston (map) at 9:00 AM on Thursday, April 30th. There you will pay your $15 entry and be given a map of the paint out boundaries. You will be able to paint from 9AM-5PM on Thursday and 9AM-5PM on Friday, April 1st. At 5:00 PM on Friday, April 1st all artists will meet at the Kinston Community Council for the Arts where your three best paintings will be turned in to be judged into a juried show. The show will coincide with the Festival on the Neuse and be on display for one week where each artist will have the opportunity to sell their work. Unsold artwork will be available for pick up from the council on Saturday, May 9, 2009. The Council retains a small commission for the sales.

I think the new format (non competition style) and being able to pay the entry fee the day of the event will prove helpful in bringing out more artists with a common love... plein air painting. Hope to see you all at this one.

Bernie

When: April 30 - May 1, 2009
Where: Neuse Way Park & Downtown Kinston (map)
Description: Juried Exhibition of plein air paintings of our beautiful Kinston! Information can be found at http://www.kinstoncca.com/

If anyone else who doesn't care to paint in the competition but would like to help me on Saturday simply show up at the event and look for our tent in mid street. Bring your gear to paint in the streets if you'd like.

Expecting a BIG turn out from OOPS members!

Join us as we paint at the Cedar Point location of the Croatan National Forest Park... Marsh scenes galore, plenty of trees, meandering pathways, hiking trails, wildlife... etc. You will want to return to this great spot to plein air paint OFTEN!

Newbies welcome... all mediums and skill levels... simply show up with your gear and be prepared to have fun! What the heck is OOPS and how do I join the FUN?

This is the sign you will see at the entrance to the park...

Follow this road back about 1/2 mile to the boat ramp below...

Plenty of great marsh scenes, water, and trees to paint...
The following images are scenes close to the parking lot...

There is a hiking trail that offers a ton of great painting opportunities... just be prepared to carry your gear anywhere from 100 yards to 1/2 mile or more. The following photos show the views from the trail.

Cedar Point Tideland Trail, a National Recreation Trail, includes a 0.6-mile loop and a 1.3-mile loop that provide excellent opportunities to view wildlife and explore the salt marsh and adjoining forest. Interpretive signs along the short loop tell the story of the ever changing salt marsh.

The trail meanders through pine and hardwood forests damaged by Hurricanes Bertha and Fran in 1996. Boardwalks cross marshes and open water and offer views of wading birds and other wildlife.

The town of Swansboro can be seen in the distance in the photo below.

Savannah (Bernie's granddaughter) enjoying the hike!

Restrooms are available near the parking area.

Grills and picnic tables are also available if anyone is interested in cooking out.

The Tidelands Trail is at Cedar Point in the southwest corner of the Croatan National Forest. Cedar Point Recreation Area offers camping, picnicking, a ramp for small boats,
a fishing pier, canoeing, and kayaking.
